The Aircraft Golfing Society was founded in 1944 by a small group of businessmen who were involved in supplying products to the aircraft industry in Weybridge.  No surprise then, that the society still has its Captain’s Day and last full fixture "White Elephant Day" at the lovely Surrey course of St George's Hill.

The Secretary for the first 37 years was Brian Songhurst, a scratch golfer in his heyday, who took the society from strength to strength.

Brian was succeeded by the inimitable Mervyn Grubb, who took the society on to what it is today.  When Mervyn moved away to America, Paddy O'Connor took over; Paddy and his family have been associated with the AGS for many years.

Tony Cash is only our 4th Hon Secretary in over 60 years!

Apart from the fixture list which changes only marginally each year, the society has enjoyed weekends in Jersey attending the Lord’s Taverners Ball and playing golf against them, social and golfing weekends at Parkstone in Bournemouth and tours to America, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

It is an interesting comment on the AGS, that the Bullybunion Plate has actually been played for twice on the Ballybunion Links, the other occasions have been on other foreign courses!

The average number of players attending fixtures is about 40, split fairly evenly between members and guests.  This year we are playing across the country from Kendleshire, nr Bristol, to the Belfry and Woburn, as well as favourites such as Sunningdale and the Berkshire.  We are also hoping to return to Hillside in the North at some point in the future.

Having just celebrated our 65th year, you will find the AGS a happy band of friendly, welcoming, businessmen and golfers, determined to have some relaxation at their favourite sport to counteract the pressures of business.
