The Captain's Day at St. George's Hill - 2nd April 2025

Well, the first write-up of the 2026 AGS golfing year!  It was all about the “Captain’s Drive-In” and it was wonderful to be back on the golf course at our “Home Club” – St George’s Hill.  John Thorne, equipped with a hickory shaft (and some “shaking knees” so I hear), he managed an incredible drive off the 1st tee!  Well done John! He was watched by many supporting AGS members and their guests.  As you know John was using a hickory shaft in order to raise funds for his charity, The Alzheimer’s Society, and he managed to reach the £1,000 mark before he took that shot – fantastic support for which he is most grateful.

Having suffered some terrible weather previously, we arrived with the sun trying to come through the clouds and certainly no wind and a lot warmer than the previous few months! The course was in fantastic condition considering the weather we have had and as always, the lunch after golf did not disappoint with a wonderful spread for the players and enjoyed by all.

With a full field of 71 players, there was some amazing golf played and the winner of the day, Adam Dowling with 39 points, also won the Past Captain’s Salver.  The Mervyn Grubb was won by Mark Shanley with a brilliant Gross 78.

Our visitors also played some brilliant golf too with the winner being Adam Scott with 39 points.  I should mention that Sam Wilson with 38 points and coming 3rd on countback also took the prize for Nearest The Pin.

We welcomed four new members to the day, Dave Norton, Matthew Parfitt, Clinton Field and Henry Bishop and I am delighted to mention that Clinton Field won the Veterans prize with 32 points.  Well played all!

The Halfway Hut and the very generous prizes were very kindly sponsored by your Captain, John Thorne. Thank you, John.

Your Captain has chosen The Alzheimer’s Society as his charity for the year and we hope that you will very generously support this wonderful charity throughout the year.  We were joined by Lindy Stannard from the Charity.  Following the fabulous lunch, Lindy briefed us on details about the Charity, which was very well received. Thank you.

The nearest the pin entries and blob bucket were well supported so thank you all for your kind donations.

Many congratulations to the winners of the day:
