February 2022
Dear Members
A brief update on my personal challenge of walking the South Downs Way to raise funds for Canine Partners before my Captain’s year finishes.
The weather had been very good to me ....until this week ....and I had covered 36 miles from Winchester to Cocking - leaving 64 miles to go. The views along this walk are beautiful, from farms; fields and villages and across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.
My thanks to those that have sponsored my efforts so far, raising just over 50% of the initial target. I'll update again as I continue on my walk and if you would like to donate to this amazing Charity the page can be found on JustGiving at this address....

January 2022 - A note from your Captain, Les White
As I approach the final weeks of my year as AGS Captain it's my turn to take on a personal challenge before our AGM in an effort to boost the funds already raised for my chosen charity, Canine Partners. Those of you that attended the Christmas Luncheon will recall that I committed to walking the South Downs Way before the end of my term - in fact that walk started on 2nd February.
The work that Canine Partners carries out is life changing for the partners that receive a fully trained dog. During his talk at the luncheon, our key speaker, Brigadier Kevin Beaton, recounted the moving story of one ex-military recipient of a Canine Partner and the positive impact this had on that individual and his family. That has been replicated across several hundred people by Canine Partners.
The generosity shown so far has been amazing, I'm hoping this final push will help even further. I've set the fundraising target low to start with but hope to be able to increase it with the help of all our members; their families; friends and colleagues. I thank you for all the support thus far and in advance for any additional support you are able to make.
The just giving web page is www.justgiving.com/LesWhite-AGS-SDW.
Look forward to seeing those that will be attending the AGM and to as many as possible to witness Rob's drive-in at St George’s Hill and the start of another great year for the AGS.
Best regards to all

23rd July - Mid-Year Review from 2021 AGS Captain – Les White
It’s hard to believe we are half way through this year’s events. Despite the restrictions, we had a great start with two days almost back to back; Captain’s Day at St Georges Hill followed closely by Hankley Common.
Those of us living south of the M25 then ventured northward to Ashridge golf club, where - along with a super day’s golf – we were made affiliate members of Clan Bygate (you had to be there to understand). I highly recommend visiting when we return to Ashridge next year.
I know many of us were looking forward not only to the golf but to the lunch at The Berkshire - the infamous steak and kidney pie and spotted dick - unfortunately Boris decided to push back the relaxing of restrictions, none the less that did not stop us having another great day.
Our most recent outing at West Hill saw a slightly smaller field than usual, but that did not detract from a special day with 30 holes in the sunshine on a magnificent course.
In fact, every course we have visited this year has been in superb condition and very welcoming, and with the exception of a couple of showers at Hankley, the weather has been exceptionally kind to us – hopefully that will continue!
Thus far all events have been subject to government restrictions, thanks from all of us must go to Jane for organising under these difficult circumstances, in particular after the car accident she was involved in on her way to Ashridge, we all wish you well Jane in your ongoing recovery.
Thanks also to all the sponsors for the excellent prizes.
Belated thanks also to those who wished me well in my Captain’s year that were unable to attend SGH. For information, apparently my drive-in was 10 minutes ahead of schedule and witnessed only by a few – in my defence David, the resident starter, requested we go off – it’s a shame there were not more of you there to witness my effort which, for once, was straight and in the middle of the fairway!
My Captain's Charity this year is Canine Partners; please take a look at the excellent work the charity carries out, by visiting their website: caninepartners.org.uk
Our “Blob” bucket is doing well, reaching just over £1,000 so far for the charity.
On the subject of raising funds for the charity, please support Kevan Bishop who is setting off on August 22nd on his “End to End” Challenge, cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats over 9 days, averaging 100 miles a day!
Kevan is aiming to raise £7,500 for the Charity. At the time of writing, he is 36% towards that target – with your support and that of your friends, family and business contacts, I am confident Kevan’s target will be beaten! See below for details of the “JustGiving” page.
The society has a few weeks break now. Our next outing is Sunningdale on August 19th – representatives from Canine Partners will be there - I look forward to seeing as many of you that can attend then.
